From product on a shop shelf to a Series of Paintings, Inspired by Bonsoy
BIO ERIC MANGEN
& THE STORY OF THE BONSOY PAINTINGS
Eric Mangen (born 1983) is an abstract painter that lives and works in Luxembourg. Mangen’s artistic approach is based on creating backgrounds like collages, he constructs and deconstructs perpetually, by surrendering to the synchronicity of errors and constant sources of inspiration.
As an artist, Eric predominantly works in large format, as space enables Eric to express himself with free movements. These gestures are dynamic and express an energy, a feeling that emerges from within. One could compare his paintings to a dance, that navigates between pure intuition and logical construct, that dictates the rhythm of the composition.
“…space enables Eric to express himself with free movements. These gestures are dynamic and express an energy, a feeling that emerges from within.”
He works with mixed media paintings and uses diverse painting supports, such as linen, wood, metal and paper Photographic transfer. Eric has taken part in major projects in the USA, Bosnia, Barcelona, France, Belgium, Luxembourg, and in 2019 he was selected for an artist residency in Melbourne and Sydney.
During his artist residency in Australia, this is where Eric first came across Bonsoy and was immediately attracted to the colours and packaging design.
One morning, while getting a coffee at a corner shop, Eric noticed the Bonsoy packaging on the shelf. He photographed the Bonsoy packs, went back to his studio with the intention to retranscribe this inspiration into his next paintings.
“Eric first came across Bonsoy and was immediately attracted to the colours and packaging design.”
After completing the Bonsoy series of three paintings, Eric posted pictures on his Instagram account @ericmangen and received a comment from @originalbonsoy and the rest is history with the paintings hanging up at the Bonsoy headquarters.
How mere serendipities create stories and encounters that last over time and continents.
